Why Bother Being an Activist?

"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.,  Civil Right Leader 1929-1968

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
--  Edmund Burke, English political writer/orator 1729-1797

"If not me, then who?  If not now, then when?"
--  Avalon Bruce, Writer 1943 -- ?

The above statements say it all and sum it up.  If we don't do it, who will?  What better time is there for political action than right now?

Of course one vote, one letter to the editor, one ANYTHING doesn't make much difference -- just like one raindrop does not a monsoon make -- but put enough of them together and look out!

It is NOT any one person alone who does more than act as a catalyst -- it is when a BUNCH of us take action together that the spirit and synergy make for a difference!

If 200 people a month read this page/site, take action and pass it along to twenty of their friends, in no time a'tall, we CAN have the attention of Austin (and perhaps Washington) and the beginnings of what could become gratification at having been part of political change -- politics as though people mattered!

When it comes right down to it, so long as there is any ox being gored, it really IS your ox -- we ALL have a dog in this fight -- the fight for more equitable distribution of services in Texas for the hungry, the homeless and the disabled!

Christians might become motivated by thinking on the statement of the Christ:  "as you do unto the least of these, you do unto me" (paraphrased).  When tribal people enter a sweatlodge, we use the phrase, "Ho, all my relations" -- a greeting signifying the Oneness of the Universe -- for we ARE all "one" -- we are all brothers and sisters as ALL were created by THE Creator!  Isn't it time we acted more like it?

The separation and isolation perpetuated under the guise of "individualism" in America is also calculated to keep us apart and divided -- every man, woman and child for him/herself.   "They" tell us on the evening news how wonderful the U.S. economy is -- but recently in West Texas when Southwestern Bell created 200 new jobs, 4000 applicants showed up, vying for the positions!

For those who would say "my ONE vote (or voice) doesn't matter", you're absolutely right -- it doesn't matter when it's the only one -- but thanks to the medium of the internet, you don't have to be a lone voice in the wilderness!  With the technology at hand right now, we can ALL have our voices heard and views transmitted, electronically, at the speed of light and without the bother of having to buy a $.33 stamp or lick an envelope!

Read/click on to see just how easy it IS to email your duly elected or send a letter to ANY editor, of just about any newspaper, just about anywhere!
